Jacob Trieber, the first Jewish Federal Judge

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I honor Jacob Trieber, born in Poland, October 6th 1853. Age thirteen, he immigrated with his family, settling first in St. Louis then eastern Arkansas. He passed the bar after intensive studies with a former supreme court justice. Throughout adulthood, he worshipped at a Reform Judaism temple.

Trieber’s political career started on a town council. He attended three Republican National Conventions. He was vice chairman of the state GOP, which nominated him for attorney general and chief justice and Congress. Party leaders knew him to be "one of the very ablest and most conservative Republicans of the state and has at all times labored for the true principles of Republicanism."

April 1897, William McKinley named him U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. This fearless prosecutor took on high-profile cases in opposition to Democrat tyranny. July 1900, he received a recess appointment for federal judge. December 1900, the President nominated him to that seat and the GOP-controlled 56th Congress soon confirmed him. Trieber earned high praise for upholding the civil rights of African-Americans.

President Theodore Roosevelt often sought his advice. Chief Justice William Howard Taft, the former Republican President, was a great admirer. In 1927, he named Trieber to a special court in New York City for clearing a backlog of cases.

Trieber’s life was remembered as "a high example of the victory that may be won over adversity, by unending labor, based upon the fundamentals of sound character and worthy ambition."

Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com.

Michael Zak is author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, a history of GOP civil rights achievement.

Each day, his YouTube videos and TikTok videos and Rumble videos and Grand Old Partisan blog celebrate more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. And, see Speech Raves for audience feedback from his presentations in thirty-one states.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."
