Notification Day for vice presidential nominee Calvin Coolidge

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I highlight a political ritual of days gone by. Originally, presidential and vice presidential nominees did not attend the conventions. Instead, party leaders visited them at their homes, with news of their being nominated. Nominees then delivered speeches, which began their campaigns. This was known as Notification Day.

July 27th 1920 was Notification Day for Republican vice presidential nominee Calvin Coolidge. At his home in Northampton, Massachusetts arrived delegates led by the Governor of Kentucky with an official announcement.  There followed a luncheon and a concert and a parade.

Next, several thousand Republicans gathered in a field at Smith College for the nominating speech and Coolidge’s acceptance speech. The nominee promised economic growth, national security and racial justice:

"America will live in security, rejoicing in an abundant prosperity and good government at home, and in peace, respect, and confidence abroad."

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
