John Beveridge, from Congressman to Lieutenant Governor to Governor in three weeks

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I salute John Beveridge, born in update New York, July 6th 1824. His family later relocated to northern Illinois. Six years he taught school in Tennessee before returning for law studies.

During the Civil War, Beveridge enlisted as captain with the state’s 8th Cavalry and was promoted to major. His regiment fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He then recruited the 17th Illinois Cavalry, being commissioned its colonel by a Republican Governor. This new regiment served in Missouri.

Peace restored, Beveridge was elected Cook County sheriff. The ambitious Republican won a seat in the state senate in 1870, and a year later, a special election for the U.S. House of Representatives. A year after that, he was elected Lieutenant Governor.

Ten days after his inauguration, the legislature elected his running mate a U.S. Senator, making Beveridge the state’s 16th Governor. His administration did its best to deal with the financial Panic of 1873 and subsequent depression.

President Chester Arthur named him Assistant United States Treasurer. Beveridge retired to the vineyards and citrus groves of Hollywood, California.

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
