Birthday of the DC Republican Party

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I celebrate birthday of the DC Republican Party. June 19th 1855 – before all but a few state GOP organizations came into existence – anti-slavery activists established the "Republican Association of Washington DC." These friends of freedom, under leadership of Lewis Clephane, denounced Democrats for supporting slavery.
Clephane managed The National Era. This abolitionist newspaper was first to publish, in serial form, the classic novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him postmaster of Washington and later to a position at the Treasury Department. He was also first Republican on the city council.

The DCGOP played an integral role in formation of the Republican Party nationwide. It called for "immediate and thorough organization of clubs or associations, somewhat similar to our own, in every city, town, and village in the Union." Its appeal, published around the country in newspapers and pamphlets, contributed mightily to just that!

January 1856, the Association published, on behalf of five state chairmen, the call for convention where the GOP formed a national organization. It also sent several delegates to the Republican National Convention that year and soon reconstituted itself as the "Republican Party of the District of Columbia". Civil rights hero Frederick Douglass, territorial governor Alexander 'Boss' Shepherd and Medal of Honor recipient Christian Fleetwood were among luminaries serving with the early DCGOP. The first office of the DCGOP was on 7th Street NW, between D and E.

Appreciating the District’s diversity as well as economic and cultural assets, the DCGOP builds on this legacy today to promote opportunity and security and liberty for all our residents. As ever, Republicans are the Party of Emancipation.

Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com

Michael Zak is author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, a history of GOP civil rights achievement.

Each day, his YouTube videos and TikTok videos and Rumble videos and Grand Old Partisan blog celebrate more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. And, see Speech Raves for audience feedback from his presentations in thirty-one states.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."

"one of the best books I ever read"
