a Republican President dedicated Farragut Square

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I admire Farragut Square, a downtown park in the nation's capital. It features a statue of Civil War hero David Farragut. The courageous admiral is best remembered for "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" Bronze for the statue and four accompanying mortars came from the propellers of his flagship, USS Hartford.

The statue had been authorized by the GOP-controlled 42nd Congress. It was cast at the Washington Naval Yard. April 25th 1881, President James Garfield keynoted the magnificent dedication ceremony:

"This Capital is silently being filled up with the heroes of other times. Men of three wars have taken their place in silent eloquence as guardians and guards of the Nation they love so well. And as the years pass on these squares and public places will be rendered more and more populous, more and more eloquent by the presence of the heroes of other days. From all quarters of our country, from all generations of its life, from all portions of its service, these heroes come by the ministry and mystery of art, to take their places."

"Today we come to hail this hero, who comes from the sea, down from the shrouds of his flagship, wreathed with the smoke and glory of victory, to take his place as our honored compatriot, and a perpetual guardian of his country’s glory."

"In the name of the Nation I accept this noble statue, and his country will guard it as he guarded his country."

Present on stage was the sculptor, Vinnie Ream. Age eighteen, she had made a statue of Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Capitol.

Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com

Michael Zak is author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, a history of GOP civil rights achievement.

Each day, his YouTube videos and TikTok videos and Rumble videos and Grand Old Partisan blog celebrate more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. And, see Speech Raves for audience feedback from his presentations in thirty-one states.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."
