Republicans and their Petition for Universal Suffrage

Grand Old Partisan commends Republican respect for women. January 29th 1866, GOP leader Thaddeus Stevens presented in the House of Representatives a petition for extending voting rights to women.

The first page was signed by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone and other members of the Women's Loyal National League, a Republican-aligned organization:

"The undersigned, Women of the United States, respectfully ask an Amendment of the Constitution that shall prohibit the several States from disenfranchising any of their citizens on the ground of sex.

"In making our demand for Suffrage, we call your attention to the fact that we represent fifteen million people — one-half of the entire population of the country — intelligent, virtuous, native-born American citizens; and yet stand outside the pale of political recognition.

"The Constitution classifies us as 'free people' and counts us whole persons in the basis of representation; and yet we are governed without our consent, compelled to pay taxes without appeal and punished for violation of law without choice of judge or juror.

"The experience of all ages, the Declaration of the Fathers, the Statute Laws of our day, and the fearful revolution through which we have just passed, all prove the uncertain tenure of life, liberty and property so long as the ballot — the only weapon of self-protection — is not in the hand of every citizen.

"Therefore, as you are now amending the Constitution, and, in harmony with advancing civilization, placing new safeguards round the individual rights of four millions of emancipated slaves we ask that you extend the right of Suffrage to Women — the only disenfranchised class of citizens — and thus fulfill your Constitutional obligation 'to guarantee to every State in the Union a Republican form of Government."

Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com

Michael Zak is author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, a history of GOP civil rights achievement.

Each day, his YouTube videos and TikTok videos and Rumble videos and Grand Old Partisan blog celebrate more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. And, see Speech Raves for audience feedback from his presentations in thirty-one states.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."
