Masaji Marumoto, the first Asian state supreme court justice

"First among Nisei"

Grand Old Partisan salutes Masaji Marumoto, born in Honolulu, January 27th 1906. He graduated first in his class from McKinley High School, then graduated with honors from University of Chicago, and became first Asian-American to graduate from Harvard Law School. 

After the Pearl Harbor attack, Morumoto chaired a government committee tasked with lowering racial tensions. Republicans credited him with dissuading the Democrat administration from mass incarceration of Hawaii’s Japanese-American populace. Enlisting in the army, he taught Japanese to military intelligence operatives and after the war served in Okinawa and Korea.


While president of the Hawaii Bar Association, Morumoto was active with the local GOP. President Dwight Eisenhower named him to the territorial supreme court. Statehood achieved, a Republican Governor appointed him a state supreme court justice.

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
