Francisco Perea – Union Army hero and Republican congressman
Grand Old Partisan salutes Francisco Perea, born in New Mexico, January 9th 1830, before the area became part of the United States. His parents' families had been prominent in Mexican politics. He attended colleges in St. Louis and New York City.
Perea fondly remembered meeting President Zachary Taylor. The rancher conveyed merchandise by mule to and from Missouri. In 1858, he won a seat on the territorial council.
Outbreak of civil war, Perea spoke throughout New Mexico on behalf of the Union cause. He recruited and supplied at his own expense a militia battalion, and enlisted as Lieutenant Colonel. His troops fought at the Battles of Glorieta Pass and Apache Canyon.
In 1862, this patriotic Republican was elected territorial delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. His priorities were economic development and statehood. Perea was delegate for the GOP’s 1864 republican national convention. A cousin, José Francisco Chaves, defeated him for another nomination.
Perea attended Ford's Theater that tragic evening. Later years, he served again on the territorial council and managed a hotel.
