William Cooper Nell, the first African-American historian and the first African-American federal civilian employee
Grand Old Partisan praises William Cooper Nell, born in Boston, December 16th 1816. He excelled at his studies and vowed to "do my best to hasten the day when the color of the skin would be no barrier to equal school rights." This talented writer edited abolitionist newspapers for William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass.
In 1850, Nell ran for the state house, as a Free Soil Party candidate. During the Civil War, he recruited African-American soldiers for the Union army. In 1863, the Lincoln administration hired him at the Boston Post Office.
Based on exhaustive research, his The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution was the first history book written by an African-American. It was required reading at many schools.
Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com.
