President Warren Harding released Socialist Eugene Debs from Prison


Grand Old Partisan appreciates Republican clemency toward political opponents. December 23rd 1921, President Warren Harding commuted the prison sentence of labor leader Eugene Debs. Also released were another twenty-three socialist agitators.


Debs had been imprisoned by the Woodrow Wilson administration for delivering a speech oppositing America fighting in WWI. While a federal penitentiary inmate, Debs received 3.4% of the popular vote in the 1920 presidential election.


Meeting with him at the White House, the President said: "Well, I've heard so damned much about you, Mr. Debs, that I am now glad to meet you personally".


Nonetheless, the administration issued this statement:

"There is no question of his guilt....He was by no means as rabid and outspoken in his expressions as many others, and but for his prominence and the resulting far-reaching effect of his words, very probably might not have received the sentence he did. He is an old man, not strong physically. He is a man of much personal charm and impressive personality, which qualifications make him a dangerous man calculated to mislead the unthinking and affording excuse for those with criminal intent."

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
