Nathan Kimball, courageous Indiana Republican

Grand Old Partisan salutes Nathan Kimball, born November 22nd 1822. Graduating from University of Louisville Medical School, he practiced in southern Indiana. He served as captain in the Mexican war, then resumed being a doctor. Running for the state senate was his entry to politics. The patriotic Whig joined the state GOP at its formation.

Outbreak of civil war, Kimball again enlisted. Battling for control of West Virginia, this proficient brigadier general defeated both Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. After recovering from a wound at Fredericksburg, he deployed to Mississippi. Twice, he declined the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor, preferring to remain in the army. Summer 1864, the Republican governor had him assigned back home, to suppress Democrat insurrectionists.


Peace restored, Kimball led the Indiana chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic, a GOP-aligned veterans organization. He was elected state treasurer and state representative. President Grant appointed him surveyor general of Utah; and President Hayes, postmaster.

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
