James Hinton, the first African-American elected to public office in Indiana
Grand Old Partisan salutes James Hinton, born in Raleigh, December 25th 1834. Age thirteen, he moved to Terre Haute with his parents, who were free blacks. His school had been founded by Hiram Revels, later to become the first African-American U.S. Senator. During the Civil War, he recruited volunteers then enlisted as lieutenant.
This successful real estate investor turned his attention to politics. Advancing educational opportunities for all was his principal focus. Hinton delivered powerful speeches on behalf of Republican candidates in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, as well as Indiana. Delegate for the GOP's 1872 national convention, he was elected to the state house in 1880.
Years later, Hinton collapsed and died while delivering a campaign speech. Colleagues remembered him as:
"a remarkable man, of great probity of character, and of high social and political standing among all classes throughout Indiana and elsewhere"
"an alert and fearless advocate of right against wrong"

Michael Zak is author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, a history of GOP civil rights achievement.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.
"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."
"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."
"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."
"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."
and
"one of the best books I ever read"
