John Harris, the first Republican Senator from Louisiana
Grand Old Partisan acclaims John Harris, born December 18th 1825. His career trajectory in Milwaukee went from merchandising clerk to realtor to bank president.
During the Civil War, Harris moved to Union-controlled Louisiana and leased a cotton plantation. This "mildest and most temperate Republican" was delegate to the state's constitutional convention. He organized former slaves into clubs for protecting their rights.
Upon re-admission to the Union, Harris won a state senate seat. Within days, the GOP-controlled legislature elected him a U.S. Senator. He voted for the 15th Amendment, granting voting rights to African-Americans.

The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
