Abraham Lincoln and "the last best hope of earth"
Grand Old Partisan commemorates Abraham Lincoln's second annual address. He delivered it to Congress on December 1st 1862.
Emancipation Proclamation going into effect within weeks, this first Republican President focused on what caused the Civil War:
"Without slavery the rebellion could never have existed; without slavery it could not continue."
"The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation."
"In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free — honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth."
Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com.
