President Trump signed the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission Act

Grand Old Partisan appreciates reverence for a great Republican, Frederick Douglass. November 2nd 2017, Donald Trump signed the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission Act. It had been passed by the GOP-controlled 115th Congress.
The President said:

"Today, I am pleased to sign into law, H.R. 2989, the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission Act, which will create the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission, which will be responsible for planning, developing, and carrying out activities to honor Frederick Douglass on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Our Nation rightly honors the life of Mr. Douglass, a former slave who became an outstanding orator and a leader of the abolitionist movement."

"All Americans have much to learn from the life and writings of Mr. Douglass, and I look forward to working with the Commission to celebrate the achievements of this great man."

As one of the sixteen members, Trump appointed Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King.

This law had been introduced by Republican Congressman Andy Harris:

"Frederick Douglass is the father of the civil rights movement, and all Americans can benefit from studying his remarkable life. Born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, through his own hard work and determination, Douglass rose out of slavery to become an author, journalist, abolitionist, and symbol for equality. Frederick Douglass’ long record of government service further demonstrates the need to honor his civic contributions. His lifelong dedication to freedom and equality should serve as an inspiration to all Americans, and these values must be shared with generations to come."

Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."
