Joseph Martin, effective Republican Speaker of the House
Grand Old Partisan honors Joseph Martin, born in Massachusetts, October 3rd 1884. Despite not having attended college, he excelled early on as a newspaper reporter and publisher. This young Republican was elected to the state house in 1912 and the state senate in 1914. He chaired the Massachusetts GOP three years.
In 1924, Martin won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, and going on to be re-elected twenty times. New Deal socialism received his emphatic condemnation. He was delegate to six Republican National Conventions and chaired the RNC from 1940 to 1942.
Having been named House Minority Leader in 1938, he became Speaker following the GOP landslide victory in the 1946 midterms. His tenure lasted two years, then repeated for another two years when Dwight Eisenhower won the presidency. It was Martin who invited General Douglas MacArthur to deliver that famous Old Soldiers Never Die speech to Congress.
In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed a law creating the Joseph W. Martin Institute for Law and Society at Stonehill College, Massachusetts.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
