George Spencer, early Alabama Republican Senator
Grand Old Partisan salutes George Spencer, born in upstate New York, November 1st 1836. After college, he moved to Iowa and studied law. Republicans named him secretary of the state senate.
Outbreak of civil war found Spencer prospecting for gold in Colorado. He enlisted as captain. September 1863, this "gallant and meritorious" officer was made colonel of the 1st (U.S.) Alabama Cavalry. Peace restored, he remained in the state.
In 1868, the GOP-controlled legislature elected him to first of two U.S. Senate terms. Spencer chaired the Committee on the District of Columbia and the Committee on Military Affairs. Receiving his vote were the 15th Amendment, Yellowstone National Park, the [anti-] Ku Klux Klan Act and the 1875 Civil Rights Act. He also served as Republican National Committeeman.
Spencer retired to a ranch in Nevada. His grave is at Arlington National Cemetery.
