Fletcher, one of the four Proctor governors of Vermont
Grand Old Partisan honors Fletcher Proctor, born November 7th 1860. He was one of four members of the Proctor family elected Governor of Vermont. His father, brother and son were also Republican Governors.
After graduating from Amherst, Fletcher served several years in the militia. After that, he was chief assistant to another Governor. He rose steadily through management of the family marble business while winning several state house and senate terms.
In 1906, Proctor won the governorship for a two-year term. He championed reforming the courts and utilities. His administration protected forests while promoting railroads and highways.
