David Jerome, Michigan's first Governor born in the state


Grand Old Partisan salutes David Jerome, born in Detroit, November 17th 1829. This industrious youth worked the family farm and rafted logs on a river and clerked at a store and mined for gold. While a Republican state senator during the Civil War, he recruited volunteers and enlisted as colonel of the 23rd Michigan Infantry. His regiment battled through Tennessee and Georgia.

Again a state senator, Jerome took part in revising the state constitution. He won a congressional term and voted for the 1875 Civil Rights Act. President Ulysses Grant named him an Indian Commissioner. In 1880, he won the governorship. His administration focused on improving railroads and other infrastructure.

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. The former Kansas Governor was the GOP's 1936 presidential nominee. Robert Taft, venerable Ohio Republican statesman

Grand Old Partisan honors Robert Taft, born in Cincinnati, September 8th 1889. His father was President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft; his grandfather Alphonso, Secretary of War and Attorney General during the Grant administration. He studied at Yale and Harvard Law School. Political activity began in the state house. Following this came the speakership, then the state senate. In 1938, amid New Deal fatigue, Taft won first of three U.S. Senate terms. This traditional conservative became "one of the most powerful U.S. Senators of the 20th century." He was known as "Mr. Republican". Taft vied for the 1944 and 1948 presidential nominations, and in 1952, he narrowly lost out to General Dwight Eisenhower.
