John Lodge – Actor, Congressman, Governor, Ambassador

Grand Old Partisan salutes John Lodge, born October 20th 1903. Soon after graduating from Harvard Law School, he achieved considerable success in Hollywood. Among his movie roles were playing Marlene Dietrich's love interest and Shirley Temple's father.

Lodge served in the Navy during WWII and was a naval reservist twenty-one more years, retiring as a captain. In 1946, this conservative Republican won first of two congressional terms. In 1950, he was elected Governor of Connecticut. Richard Nixon selected older brother Henry Cabot Lodge to be his 1960 running mate.

President Eisenhower named John Lodge ambassador to Spain; President Nixon, ambassador to Argentina; President Reagan, ambassador to Switzerland. He died of a heart attack while speaking to a GOP Women’s organization. His grave is at Arlington National Cemetery.
