Jim Bunning, Hall of Fame Pitcher and Republican Senator

Grand Old Partisan applaud Jim Bunning, born in Kentucky, October 23rd 1931. He studied economics at Xavier University. After five years in the minors, the sidearmer with "an excellent curve ball, a confusing delivery and a sneaky fast ball" pitched seventeen seasons of major league baseball. His teams were the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bunning strongly backed players' union demands for higher salaries. "Recognizing the need to ensure that all players receive fair representation in their dealings with major league club owners, Jim, along with a number of his peers, helped pave the way for generations of players." In 1996, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.


Returning home, the conservative Republican won election to his local town council, then to the state senate. In 1986, he was elected to first of six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1998, he won first of two U.S. Senate terms.

When I cast my votes, I thought about how they would affect my grandchildren and the next generation of Kentuckians, not where the political winds at the time were blowing."

John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
