Today, I honor Green Currin, born into slavery near Nashville, October 20th 1842. After emancipation, he settled in Kansas, working as a policeman. There, the Topeka GOP nominated him for municipal judge.

The lawman relocated to Oklahoma during the 1889 Land Run. Following year, he was elected to the first-ever session of the territorial house. Representative Currin authored a bill protecting civil rights, but it lost by a single vote. In his words: "It makes my blood chill when I hear a Republican talking aloud about voting for a Democrat."
After one term, the Benjamin Harrison administration named Currin a deputy federal marshal. In 1897, a Republican Governor named him to the board of regents for what is now Langston University. He is remembered as "a true pioneer in every sense of the word."

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
