Daniel Pratt, eminent Indiana Republican Senator
Grand Old Partisan salutes Daniel Pratt, born October 26th 1813. He relocated from Maine to Indiana as a teen. The ambitious Whig studied law, worked at the secretary of state's office, and won two terms in the legislature.
Pratt was delegate to the 1860 and 1868 Republican National Conventions and served on the state GOP central committee. During the Civil War, he enlisted in an emergency regiment when rebel cavalry invaded his state. In 1868, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, but, before taking his seat, the legislature elected him a U.S. Senator.
April 1871, Pratt delivered an important speech denouncing outrages committed by Democrat Klansmen. Receiving his vote were the [anti-] Ku Klux Klan Act, Yellowstone National Park and the 1875 Civil Rights Act. President Ulysses Grant named the "thouroughly honest" statesman to an important office, Commissioner of Internal Revenue. He died soon after declining the 1876 gubernatorial nomination on account of ill health.
