Consuelo Bailey, first Woman elected Lieutenant Governor
Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than SEVENTEEN decades of Republican heroes and heroics.
Today, I honor Consuelo Bailey, born October 19th 1899. This young Republican graduated from Boston University School of Law. She became the first woman admitted to practice before the Vermont supreme court and age twenty-five was elected county prosecutor.
Bailey won a term in the state senate. She then worked as a congressional staffer. In 1934, the Vermont GOP elected her Vice Chair and, following year, Republican National Committeewoman. At the 1936 Republican National Convention, she denounced "the New Deal alphabet soup" of federal agencies.
In 1953, during her third term, the state house named her speaker. The following year, she was elected Lieutenant Governor. A highlight of thirty-seven years with the RNC was calling the roll of states at the party’s 1968 and 1972 national conventions. Ronald Reagan keynoted a Salute to Connie Bailey event.

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.
"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."
"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."
"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."
"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is more important to our party now than ever before."
and
"one of the best books I ever read"
