construction of the Supreme Court building
Grand Old Partisan spotlights the U.S. Supreme Court Building. October 13th 1932, President Herbert Hoover laid the cornerstone for a magnificent neoclassical structure.
It had been designed by Cass Gilbert, architect of the Woolworth Building and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce headquarters. The marble of the exterior is from Vermont, of the courtyards from Georgia, and of the corridors from Alabama. The wooden doors and paneling are American oak.
The project had been championed by Chief Justice William Howard Taft, so that the Supreme Court would no longer have to meet in the Capitol. He wanted "a building of dignity and importance suitable for its use as the permanent home of the Supreme Court of the United States." The GOP-controlled 71st Congress appropriated $10 million and named a commission to select the site.
In his keynote address, Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes observed that "the Republic endures, and this is the symbol of its faith."
Back to Basics for the Republican Party is my civil rights history of the GOP. To quote the book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more Democrats will worry about the future of theirs. For more information, see www.grandoldpartisan.com.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
