WIlliam Sprague – "Last of the Civil War Governors"

Grand Old Partisan salutes William Sprague, born in Rhode Island, September 11th 1830. His uncle was Governor as well as Senator. He co-managed the family manufacturing business, and in 1860 was himself elected the state's chief executive.

Outbreak of civil war, a brigade that the 'Boy Governor' had organized soon arrived to defend Washington, DC. Sprague fought at First Bull Run. He attended the Loyal War Governors Conference, which supported the Emancipation Proclamation.

His first wife was Kate Chase, daughter of Abraham Lincoln's Treasury Secretary. In 1863, the GOP-controlled legislature elected him to first of two U.S. Senate terms. Receiving his vote were the 13th, 14th 15th Amendments; the 1866 Civil Rights Act; the (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act; Yellowstone National Park; and the 1875 Civil Rights Act.
