Robert Emmet keynoted the first Republican National Convention

Grand Old Partisan honors Robert Emmet, born in Dublin, September 9th 1792. Age twelve, he moved with his family to New York. His uncle and namesake was the famous Irish rebel executed by the British.

Emmet studied at Columbia College and became a lawyer. His early career included state legislator, court registrar, New York City counsel, and appellate judge. He also served as militia captain during the second war against Britain.

June 1856, Republicans selected this former Democrat to deliver the keynote address at their first national convention, in Philadelphia. Emmet denounced rival nominee James Buchanan for submitting to slave owners who controlled the Democratic Party. His eloquence still inspires:

"I appreciate the honor that was conferred upon me in being nominated a delegate, and I do now say, we being all assembled here, that no man in any country can boast at this moment of a higher position, or one more dignified, than that of a delegate holding a seat in this Convention. We are here for noble and high and holy purposes."

"We mean to concentrate and gather under our wings all the odds and ends of parties — all the isms of the day. Be it so. Let them come to us with all their isms. We will merge them all in that great ism, patriotism."

"We have a high duty to perform, and I am sure that at the close of this Convention the people will say with one acclaim, 'Well done, good and faithful servants.'"

Clarence Thomas cited Back to Basics for the Republican Party in a Supreme Court decision.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"

"Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."

"Michael Zak wrote the definitive history of the GOP."

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party is the most significant contribution to the Republican Party in the last twenty years apart from Ronald Reagan."
