John Brough, tireless War Governor of Ohio
"patriotic, far-sighted, clear in his convictions of duty, firm in their maintenance, and fearless in their execution"
Grand Old Partisan honors John Brough, born September 17th 1811. Apprenticed to a printer when his parents died, he later studied at Ohio University. Over the years, this "big bull of a man with driving energy" published four newspapers.
His political career began with two years as clerk of the state senate. This he followed with a term in the state house and six years as state auditor. Brough then focused on business ventures.
Outbreak of civil war, he left the Democratic Party and strongly supported the Union cause. In 1863, Republicans nominated him for governor. President Lincoln congratulated him for defeating a pro-Confederate Democrat: "Glory to God in the Highest. Ohio has saved the Nation."
Brough declined an offer to replace Salmon Chase at the Treasury Department. He died four months before end of his term.
