George Washington Murray, early African-American Republican Congressman
Grand Old Partisan honors George Washington Murray, born in South Carolina, September 22nd 1853. Once emancipated by the GOP, he learned to read and write, then taught school. This ambitious youth attended the state university until Democrats expelled all its African-American students.
Murray raised vegetables and cotton on sixty-four acres, and lectured for the Colored Farmers Alliance. Intellectual brilliance gained him eight patents for agricultural inventions. He chaired a county Republican organization. President Benjamin Harrison appointed him customs inspector at Charleston.
In 1892, Murray won first of two congressional terms. He spoke eloquently against Democrat attempts to repeal federal laws guaranteeing African-Americans their right to vote. Atlanta's highly successful 1895 Cotton States and International Exhibition was one of his initiatives.
In 1905, Murray relocated to Chicago and became an aide to Mayor "Big Bill" Thompson. He was delegate at several Republican National Conventions.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!"
