a Republican President established the Small Business Administration

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I spotlight origin of the Small Business Administration.

In 1953, Republicans wanted to abolish the Depression-era Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Two decades of Democrat corruption had focused it on big business.

Dwight Eisenhower asked Congress to replace the RFC with an entity "to aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns." July 30th, the President signed the Reconstruction Finance Corporation Liquidation Act.


This law became known as the Small Business Act, for establishing the SBA. Though originally temporary, Eisenhower succeeded in making it permanent.

Grand Old Partisan celebrates more than seventeen decades of Republican heroes and heroics. Today, I commemorate ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. It became part of the Constitution on August 26th 1920. Republican Senator Aaron Sargent had written this Women's Suffrage Amendment in 1878, but Democrats delayed ratification for decades. After the GOP won control of Congress in the 1918 midterm elections, Republican Representative James Mann introduced the measure again. Within hours it passed. John Wesley Cromwell – DC Republican Educator and Scholar

Grand Old Partisan honors John Wesley Cromwell, born into slavery, September 5th 1846. Years after the Civil War focused on working for the American Missionary Association in Virginia. He was delegate at two Republican state conventions as well as a constitutional convention. Following this came law studies at Howard University. Recognizing his talent, the Ulysses Grant administration named Cromwell to various positions and the Chester Arthur selected him to represent Washington DC at the New Orleans World’s Fair. He became the first Black attorney to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission. It was in scholarship that Cromwell won renown. Publications such as People’s Advocate , Washington Record and Journal of Negro History benefited from his scholarship. He also served as principal at four high schools in the capital.
